Caterplus, Elior UK's care and retirement living business, has partnered with caterers Taylor Shaw and Edwards & Blake to promote engagement between schools and the residents of retirement living communities.
An initial trial involving seven schools where Taylor Shaw or Edwards & Blake provide catering and local retirement communities celebrated the Coronation in May, with pupils creating Coronation-themed postcards, bookmarks, placemats, and bunting.
These creations were shared with retirement communities served by Caterplus, with residents also sharing memories of past royal events, including the Coronation of Elizabeth II.
Claire Field, a teacher at Dobcroft Junior School, says: "The children and staff of Dobcroft Junior School are honoured to have been part of this initiative.
The students who visited Windsor House thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to share their experiences, and we hope this partnership will continue to flourish."
Nancy, a year 6 pupil at Dobcroft Junior School, says: "It was a great experience to listen to the views of the elderly residents and their memories of Queen Elizabeth's Coronation and how it compared to King Charles' Coronation."
The initiative recognises some of the benefits associated with intergenerational relationships, including reducing loneliness, building social connections, promoting shared experiences, combating ageism, and boosting mental wellbeing and self-confidence.
The Sheffield visit was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on both the children and residents.
As part of the collaboration, twelve children from Dobcroft Junior School in Sheffield visited residents at Windsor House, a retirement living community, and engaged in discussion about the Coronation and daily school life.
The children took great pride in showcasing their Coronation-themed creations while eagerly absorbing the captivating stories shared by the residents.
They are now preparing to present their learnings at an upcoming school assembly."
