Setting New Standards in Housing

A series of standards documents from The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) identify seven desirable development and behavioural characteristics for housing professionals.

Developed in collaboration with hundreds of CIH members, tenants and residents, housing organisations and other professional bodies, the standards are designed to raise the professional competency of everyone working in housing, regardless of their role or specialism.

Gavin Smart, CIH chief executive, explains:

“We want every housing professional to be recognised for their knowledge, behaviours, resilience and dedication to the sector.

“I believe that by applying the characteristics and standards, the housing profession will gain a higher degree of trust and credibility. It’s from this position of trust that we can best achieve our purpose – to create a future in which everyone has a place to call home.”

The institute is also developing new tools and materials to complement the professional standards and further support individuals and organisations. These will include a self-assessment function to score against each  standard, new training content, and materials for boosting housing professionals’ knowledge and skills.
